WW1 - Messines Ridge, The Battle of Messines (1917)
A creeping barrage, 700 yd (640 m) deep, began and protected the British troops as they secured the ridge with support from tanks, cavalry patrols and aircraft. A force of New Zealand, Irish, Australian, Canadian and British troops took their objectives and 7,000 German soldiers were captured. A massive explosive charge was detonated under Hill 60, south east of Ypres, completely destroying the German front line at the northern end of Messines Ridge, on the 17th of June 1917.
